An overview of The British Virgin Islands...

The 60-island chain of the BVI is a great example of how a proactive government can encourage a dynamic an successful offshore economy.

The BVI has become an influential player in the world of offshore finance, but you should not overlook the factors that make the BVI a unique expat destination.

The BVI is very different to most OFCs (Offshore Financial Centers). With a population of just 23,500 it is sparsely populated with stunning topography of dramatic hills and stunning beached.

It also has a reputation as the sailing capital of the world. Expat workers considering a move to the islands should be aware of what to expect as it isn't for everyone.

There are plenty of OFCs around the world which are more highly developed (Dubai, Hong Kong or Singapore) or islands where there is a little more life (The Cayman Islands or Bermuda), but The BVI has a unique appeal.

It is particularly attractive to those who enjoy the outdoors and the sea. For professionals, particularly lawyers and accountants, daily working life is similar to other offshore accountancy firms, the major difference is out of work, where you will need to appreciate the slower pace of life.

Hammocks and beach-side cocktails are the order of the day. Historically, the islands were originally settled by the Arawak Indians and then the Caribs before Christopher Columbus dropped anchor in 1493.

After many years of jostling between European powers, it came under Dutch control from 1648 until 1666 when the British gained control and it has been a territory or colony of the UK ever since.

Here is a brief statistical run-down of the BVI:

* Tortola is the main island with a population of around 19,000.

* The country has a population of approx. 23,500.

* Half of the country's population is expat Road Town is the main town and port of the BVI.

* The islands cover a total of 153sq.km

* Mount Sage is the highest point at 521m ASL

* Hurricane season is July to October

* Moving to the British Virgin Island often proves to be a life-defining experience and few accounting expats look forward to returning home after a few years in the sun. So why not find your dream job in the sun?
